Your face

I haven't seen your face in a while
and I thought I had not missed it
but then I thought of the curves of its smile
and how your eyes are laughter I drown into

And then I got up and walked the path
to your house, as I had done so many times before
and I found myself standing in front of your door
knowing it was not yours anymore

And that I was alone
I haven't seen your face in a while
yet I can see it in my mind's eye
So clearly the curves of its smile

and in your eyes the dancing laughter I long
to sink into, to the bottom of its warm water
to where I'm curled up and hear my beating heart
alive, yet I need to breathe no more

And I yearn for the embrace of the before
but I know that I now live in the after
and the curves of your smile have faltered in my thoughts
and I haven't seen your face in a while
