The Road

I saw a road
It was long and winding
twists and turns forever more
and on my back a sack
a heavy load

Such a road!
Heavy grew my feet
Warily I stood there and gazed
Truly, grew more and more amazed
Stepping on this road didn't seem clever

To wit:

A storm in the sky
My umbrella was leaky
That traffic light there was red forever
Through a city in a maze of alleys so dark
The street lights were failing
That bridge, decidedly creaky
And in the water, is that a shark?
A slope too high
Then a cliff of dizzying depth, no railing
Such potholes
asphalt eating moles?

Truly obstruction after obstruction
Moreover, much of that road was still under construction
And to start it a booth asking for a heavy toll!

And yet, so far in a haze; a tiny doll?
At the other end, you?
So what shall I do?

Again, I gaze at the road
Dropped some of my load
Blinked; the road seems all right

I see:

Green trees in the sunlight
The street seems to glow
But any rain would freshen the air
Then maybe a rainbow
Those alleys not quite a scare
Have a shop for a gift
Over there a fountain
That place looks quite merry
Will that car give me a lift
On the water a ferry
Nice view from the mountain
