Rock

So cold waves now crash against the shore
A rock still stands in surf, defying spray
It's dusk today, wind from winter's core
The breaking sun just spat a final ray

Alone in the dark a rock is rushing on
Forged primeval, still, of grit and ice
The sunlight cracks the shell, a breaking dawn
A sword stands forth, and through the sky a slice

This is our house and it is built on clay
Just ram the poles in mud, but then it stands
Our words did dance once, be it as it may
Yet now pallid worms gnaw at sea washed lands

Do we glance up like ancient beasts of yore
Whose thundering herds fill tracks with sprays of dust
Shimmering light, hapless lives would be no more
A flash in heated air, come down it must

An angry rock, it booms cracking through the air
Winter calm, or storm, have you seen the sun?
It's leading fire, and rains of ash, despair
Don't you know that we have only just begun?

With heart weighing heavy in our hand
We straighten spines, reality we tilt
This is the rock, our house that we have built
We open eyes to make a sudden stand
