Midnight vigil

I opened up my eyes in the middle of the night
In the sea of dreams I found a port
I saw the moon amongst the racing clouds
in this centre point of time

In what distant deeps did my dreams reside?
Nothing is the way it seems
I hear the wind in rustling leaves
Amidst the trees, two piercing points of light
I blink in bilateral confusion

I broke the surface of the waves, but to no sun
On the fragile surface I reside
Now wait for the dark to pull me back asleep, asunder

I watch the patterns flow from me
in the forest of the night
It's a sudden place to be

Alone I sit, a broken knight, in a vigil for my sleep
My shield, my mail, a single candle flame
forged from enumerating sheep
Back to the time it had all begun

A burning shape arises from the dark
Its claws leave ripples on my heart
The fire grows, incandescent in profusion

The beast soars, aflame, and leaps into the rue
I see a trail of glowing sparks
"Maker, follow me", it burns, and I do
Though its hunter soul roamed far and wide
It left me drifting here, in the tranquil sea

The moon beams true
and he who wrought the beast has set asail again
I sink back into the deep
